What Is Prism for PTSD?

Prism is an FDA-cleared neurofeedback therapy developed by GrayMatters Health. It targets the amygdala — the brain's alarm center, which becomes overactive in PTSD — and teaches you to bring that activity down yourself.

During each session, you wear a comfortable EEG headset while interacting with a calming computer simulation. As your brain's stress signal quiets, the scene on screen responds in real time. Over a series of sessions, you build a durable, practical skill: the ability to regulate your own emotional response — in the clinic, and in daily life.

Prism is prescribed and directed by Dr. Jerald Block and used alongside your ongoing PTSD care, whether that includes psychotherapy, medication, or both.

First in the Region

Diamond Edge TMS is the first clinic in Southwest Washington and Oregon to offer Prism for PTSD — right here in Vancouver, minutes from Portland.

A Different Kind of PTSD Therapy

How Prism Works

Step 1 · Listen

Your Brain Activity Is Measured

You wear a non-invasive EEG headset that reads a validated, amygdala-based brain signal associated with PTSD. Nothing enters your body — no magnets, no electricity, no medication.

Step 2 · Train

You Practice Calming the Signal

An interactive simulation responds to your brain activity in real time. As you find mental strategies that lower your stress signal, the scene on screen calms — instant feedback that helps your brain learn.

Step 3 · Carry It With You

The Skill Becomes Yours

Over roughly eight weeks of sessions, the regulation strategies you develop become second nature — a skill you can use whenever symptoms flare, long after treatment ends.

Is Prism Right for You?

Who Prism Can Help

Prism may be a good fit if you are an adult living with PTSD and:

  • You want to avoid medications, or medications alone haven't been enough
  • You've put off trauma-focused therapy because you dread retelling what happened — Prism does not require you to revisit or describe your trauma
  • You're a veteran or first responder looking for a practical, skills-based approach
  • You want to take an active role in your own recovery
How Prism fits into your care: Prism is FDA-cleared as an adjunctive treatment — it works alongside your overall PTSD care plan under the direction of a healthcare professional. At your consultation, Dr. Block will review your history and help you decide whether Prism, TMS, psychotherapy, medication, or a combination is the right path for you.

Common Questions

Prism for PTSD: FAQ

Yes. Prism received FDA 510(k) clearance as an adjunctive treatment for symptoms associated with PTSD, used under the direction of a healthcare professional together with other pharmacological and/or non-pharmacological care. In clinical study, Prism therapy significantly reduced PTSD symptoms with minimal adverse effects, and improvements were maintained at three-month follow-up.

No. Prism sessions use a neutral, non-trauma-based simulation. You never have to describe, relive, or process the traumatic event during Prism training. For many people this removes the biggest barrier to starting PTSD treatment.

Prism is non-invasive and painless. You simply wear an EEG headset that reads your brain activity — nothing is delivered into your body. Clinical studies demonstrated a high safety profile with minimal adverse effects.

TMS uses magnetic pulses to stimulate specific brain regions and is FDA-cleared for depression and OCD. Prism delivers nothing to the brain — instead, it measures your brain activity and teaches you to change it. The two treatments work in completely different ways, and we offer both at Diamond Edge TMS.

A typical course runs about eight weeks, with regular sessions in our Vancouver office. Each visit is comfortable and relatively brief, and no recovery time is needed — you can drive yourself and return to your day immediately.

No. Prism is designed to work alongside your existing care. Many patients continue psychotherapy or medication during Prism treatment. Dr. Block will coordinate your overall treatment plan.

Coverage for Prism varies. Contact our office at (360) 838-3654 and we'll walk you through cost, coverage, and payment options before you commit to anything.
